Vitamin B12

What does B12 do?

Cyanocobalamin - this is the only vitamin that contains essential mineral element cobalt.

Vitamin B12 is a complex organic compound of cobalt with a cyanogen group, wherein the amount of cobalt therein reaches 4.5%. It was subsequently found that cobalamin may be connected with other anions like nitrite, sulfite, gidroksianion. The latter is a natural compound called "oksikobalamin."

In human body cobalt performs one single function - it somehow connects into one colossal structure the molecules of vitamin B12. In metabolism, it plays no role.

The main function of cyanocobalamin – is maintenance of normal hematopoiesis, this vitamin prevents the development of anemia, reduces cholesterol in the blood.

Participating in the process of hematopoiesis, it increases the efficiency of iron, which is essential to the maturation of red blood cells.

Vitamin B12 is involved in the synthesis and metabolism of proteins, carbohydrates and lipids, the formation of red blood cells, in the construction of protein and fat structures of the myelin protective layer. Without vitamin B12 myelin degrades, the protective sheath around nerve cells exfoliate and atrophy. Nerves become bare, the person becomes irritable, frightening symptoms in the extremities appear, such as numbness, itching, the first signs of paralysis.

Improves concentration, memory and increases the ability to balance. Molecules of folic acid help to develop choline, which activates the brain, providing us the protection from stress and healthy nerves.

One of the main tasks of vitamin B12 is the production of methionine, which "conducts" feelings of kindness, joy, love. Any form of mental disorder, up to schizophrenia, is not nothing but a metabolic disorder in the brain and nerve fibers.

Where can B12 be found?

The largest amount of vitamin B12 is found in meat products (liver, kidney and heart). Quite a lot of vitamin B12 can be found in cheese, seafood (crab, salmon fish, sardines), slightly less than in meat and poultry.

How much B12 do you need?

The need for it is minimal: it is not measured in milligram but in micrograms - the thousandths of a milligram, and it is only 3.1 micrograms per day.

Lack and excess of B12

Vitamin B12 deficiency causes anemia, which is characterized by a decrease in the number of red blood cells, fatigue and neurological disorders. In case of overdose some allergic reactions such as heart pain, itching, abnormal liver function may develop.
